Practice, Prepare & Ace Your Exam!

Whether you're trying to get a learner's permit OR transfer your out-of-state license, you'll need to know all of your state's road signs to achieve a passing score on the DMV's written knowledge exam.

Benefits of a Road Sign Practice Test

Noticing the subtle differences between certain road signs could determine whether you pass the DMV's written knowledge test. The benefits of taking a practice test to prepare for this part of the exam include:

  • Understanding your grasp of the materials.
    • Taking a road signs practice test will help you determine which road signs you'll need to study before taking the DMV's written knowledge exam.
    • Practice tests will help you become familiar with the DMV written test's format.
  • Earning your driver's license sooner.
    • A large percentage of first-time test takers don't pass the written examination on the first attempt—take a practice test and don't become part of that statistic!
  • Saving you time and money.
    • In most states, if you fail a test you'll have to wait a predetermined period of time AND pay a retesting fee before you can retest.
  • Becoming a safer driver.
    • Knowing all of the road signs will help you stay safe on the road and be less likely to get in an accident.

In order to drive in North Carolina, you’ll be required to pass the official NC DMV test. It’s also known as the DMV permit test, driving test, DMV written test, driver’s license test, or simply the driver’s test. There are 25 questions on the North Carolina learner’s permit knowledge test, and you must answer 20 of them correctly to achieve the 80% passing score you need to get your permit. As North Carolina has a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) Program, there are several types of learner’s permits. The youngest age at which you may be eligible to drive a vehicle with a Limited Learner Permit, which will only allow you to drive when supervised, is 15 years old. It will cost $20, and in addition to other requirements, you will need to pass a knowledge test. There are several requirements for each phase of the GDL program, so check the 2021 North Carolina Driver’s Handbook or NCDOT website before you apply. In order to pass the knowledge test, you will need to study the handbook, and it will also help to take DMV practice tests like this one. To help you prepare, we’ve designed this NC DMV practice test -- use it as your first step to prepare for the official exam. And remember: there can never be too much practice.
