Driver Route Sheet

HomeGPS SystemsGPS Recommendations

A document accounting for the output of production and tracing the sequence of operations of a batch of manufactured components. The route sheet is used in serial and especially individual production to show the workers’ output, calculate the wages of the workers, and exercise operative super-vision of the movement of parts in production. Route drivers pick up and deliver supplies to various local customers. Many businesses that deliver and pick up supplies and materials hire route drivers to work full- and part-time hours during all shifts, including nights and weekends. Route drivers report to, and work most closely with, the dispatcher, but primarily work independently.

1st Post. I drive a school bus as a sub driver. I drive as many as 50 routes as needed. I neeed to use a gps to record a route with stops - as with tracking units. I also need to recall this route/stops to use later without inputing each stop again.
It would also be great to be able to use home computer to save and edit data
Thanks

Driver Route Sheet

  • There is another post here about school bus drivers and GPS you might want to look at. You might want to post at the end of that thread as well to see how it worked out for that person.
Based on what you've suggested, you might want to look at something like the TomTom ONE. It has a great feature called TomTom Itinerary Planning. This allows you to create multiple routes (Itinerary), with each route having multiple destinations or multiple waypoints.
In your case I would create an itinerary for each route, with each stop setup as waypoints, and the last stop (or where the bus is finally parked) as the final destination in the itinerary. This would involve either driving the route ahead of time and programming in the waypoints/stops, OR if you know the street address of each stop you could program them in without driving the route.
Note that in this example you wouldn't really be driving the route and 'recording' the route, but rather just preprogramming in each individual stop. The GPS would therefore calculate the best way to get from one stop to the next. If the way it calculates isn't exactly the way you need to go, you can always add in other waypoints to force it along the desired route.
Another advantage the TomTom devices might have in this respect is that you can connect the device to your computer and setup the Itineraries (routes) with all of the waypoints (stops) directly on the computer, saving everything to the GPS as you go along. You would do this via the TomTom Home application.
  • Can the route be saved to be used later and will it give a track of a route traveled.
  • The Itineraries can be saved and recalled later, yes. What do you mean by giving a track of the route?
  • As you drive a route you can replay the route to see were you have gone.
By saving the route do you mean that I can recall a complete route later just by pulling up a trip.
  • Yes, it can save the Itinerary to be pulled up later. No, it does not record track logs.
  • I think the Garmin Street Pilot 2720 will do what you want.
  • Yes, that is true. The 2720 will save routes with multiple stops. It will also save track logs which can be played back later if you need the data.
  • The 2720 looks to have all the things I need. I only worry about it being an older unit with no battery for mobile use.
Do any of the newer unit with have these features
  • I am not sure if the Zumo will due what you want, maybe Tim knows through his testing. But IMHO if you want a handheld to use out of the vechicle, for hiking bicycling etc, a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx, would fit the bill. A unit that tries to be both a handheld and an automotive usually does not do both very well, again IMHO.
  • No, the Zumo only allows one via (waypoint, stop) per route. The nice thing about older GPS models is that if you can find one that has the features you want.... they can be had ad a decent price. Right now you can find the 2720 for about $450 but when it was first announced the MSRP was $1184.
  • If I had it to do over again, I would rather have a 2720 or 2820 instead of a NUVI, for the car. And a 60CSx for out side the car. I have the 60CSx and the NUVI only leaves the car when I fly out and rent a car at destination.
But everyone has different needs, and those two units would have worked best for me. But usually you don't know the capabilities of the unit until you have it and use it for a while. Don't get me wrong I don't plan on selling my NUVI 360, but some of the features of the SP 27xx/28xx are better to my liking.

a document accounting for the output of production and tracing the sequence of operations of a batch of manufactured components. The route sheet is used in serial and especially individual production to show the workers’ output, calculate the wages of the workers, and exercise operative super-vision of the movement of parts in production. The route sheet accompanies the batch of components in all manufacturing operations to aid in supervising the observance of technological discipline and the preservation of all elements. Thus the route sheet combines the features of a managing and an accounting document, since it contains standardized data (such as time standards and cost) and information about the actual movement of the manufactured components and about the workers’ output in each operation. The route sheet has played a more important role since the introduction of automatic production control and of the use of network schedules.
